Types of wall switches

31-05-2022

There are different types of wall switches wit many shapes, sizes and functions. Take a look at some of the following types to help you make a decision:

Single pole switch: This light switch is considered to be one of the most commonly used switches in many countries. Therefore, single-pole switches use simple switch switching to control equipment, sockets, and lights from one position. Flip this switch on unipolar models to connect or disconnect the circuit. You need to connect the switch in the correct direction to ensure that the marking matches the position of the light switch. The single pole light switch may also have two brass screws on both sides of the switch. These brass terminals then accommodate incoming and outgoing hot wires. In addition, you can also find the green ground terminal in this type of light switch.

Two-way switch: Like the single-pole wall switch, the double-pole light switch also has a green grounding screw. Use an on/off toggle switch to control sockets and lights from one position. With its four brass terminals, it can effectively accommodate two different hot wires. This shows that these bipolar models can be switched to 240 volt circuits. If you are considering installing a two-way switch, remember to hire a certified electrician . This ensures that the light switch is installed correctly and professionally.

Three-way switch: This kind of light switch usually appears in pairs, allowing you to correctly turn the light on and off from two different positions. Generally, 3-way switches are best installed in long corridors. The three-way switch design is considered more complicated than other types of switches. The hot wire in this design is connected to the common screw (COM), while the remaining terminals are used to connect the leads of the switch. Like the light switch discussed earlier, the 3-way light switch also has a green ground screw.

4-way switch: The 4-way light switch is basically combined with the 3-way switch to control lights in three or more positions. You can easily find the 4-way light switch through four different terminals.

Switch design

In addition to the light switch types mentioned, they can also be distinguished according to their design:

Push button switches: Push button switches are considered less common than other switches. Some models provide a spring-loaded design that will eventually return to the original position after being pressed. If you push back, the other button switches will remain pressed, and if the circuit is disconnected, click back to the original position.

Toggle switch: This kind of light switch is very common. Its toggle design utilizes a lever that is angled in the switch position. If you move the toggle switch down or up, it will disconnect or connect the circuit.

Selection switch: The selection switch contains a rotary lever or knob so that you can choose different lighting settings according to your needs. These switches are also designed in two modes.
